Dr. Michael Dorey,

Dr. Michael W. Dorey completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Acadia University and obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from Memorial University, graduating among the top of his class. He served as chief resident in ophthalmology at Dalhousie University. He is also one of the few ophthalmologists in North America with dual fellowship certifications: an ocular pathology fellowship from the University of Ottawa and a glaucoma/anterior segment fellowship from the Drexel University College of Medicine in Pittsburgh. He is currently working as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Alberta.
Dr. Dorey is considered among the top cataract and refractive surgeons in the field. He performs procedures on some of the most complex intraocular cases and is often consulted by other surgeons or referred the more challenging patients. Dr. Dorey is actively involved in training ophthalmology students in the newest cataract surgery techniques at the University of Alberta.
Dr. Dorey is one of only a handful of surgeons in the province who has completed training for the keratoconus treatment Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (CXL) plus laser.
Accomplishments and Awards
Dr. Dorey has won numerous scholarship awards, including the prestigious Killam scholarship (awarded to medical school graduates of extraordinary ability), and the Hewlett-Packard Award for being the top undergraduate student.
Dr. Dorey was featured on CBC, CTV and Global News for his innovative work on new micro-invasive surgical techniques. He has presented his research at many conferences including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Cataract & Refractive Surgery and the American Glaucoma Society. He has published numerous articles in international publications, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, and has been cited by several authors worldwide. One of his works, Focal Points, published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, serves as a teaching module for ophthalmologists around the world. In 2017, Dr. Dorey has also been awarded teacher of the year, as voted by ophthalmology trainees at the University of Alberta.
Dr. Dorey is actively involved in humanitarian projects locally and globally. He was involved in a four-week mission on education and surgical teaching of ophthalmology students in Kenya and Ethiopia in 2014.
As medical director for LASIK MD for many years, Dr. Dorey is regarded as a leading practitioner in his field.
